by Nancy Crowe

Jo Ann Emerson, Sue W. Kelly, Diana DeGette, Deborah D. Price, Lynn C. Woolsey

One lost her husband and had to decide whether to fill his seat in Congress. Another, after losing her nine-year-old daughter, is taking a leading role in passing legislation to improve cancer research and treatment. Another found new ways to integrate her faith with her work toward peace and justice. Another became the first former welfare mother to serve in Congress, and yet another, who ran for Congress at age 58 with no experience in public office, believes her journey was all part of God's plan.

The women described here are five of the eight Presbyterian women currently serving in the United States House of Representatives.* In this . . . May/June issue of Horizons, read a collection of interviews, they share how their faiths led them on their varied paths-and how it continues to inform their work in Washington, D.C., and beyond.
