The Venerable Bead

When we think of beads, we usually think of an object of personal adornment, a favorite necklace or beaded sweater. Beads are baubles, tiny bits of finery and decoration. But, if we look a little deeper, we find that beads are not only decorative, but are deeply rooted in our human experience, our cultural heritage and identity. Throughout the centuries, beads have been used as currency, as amulets and curatives, to express social and economic circumstances, political history and religious beliefs.
