Rights of Partnership
I am sorry but I don't agree with [Washington Watch, July/August
2001]. As far as I'm concerned, this is very much out of place.
While the gay and lesbian population needs to be treated like
human beings, in my opinion they are not living as God wants
them to live. They should not be given the same benefits as married
men and women receive. I think the church needs to take a hard
stand against this. We need more traditional family articles,
not this. I haven't found anywhere in the Bible where God condones
this lifestyle. You love the sinner but hate the sin and, to
me, same sex couples is a sin.--Donna Klemm, Boynton Beach,
Florida
Helpful and Relevant
Thank you for your most current issue in which the focus was
sexuality. I know you will get a lot of flack for it from others,
but I truly appreciated the honesty of the writing and the depth
of the theological reflection. One of my areas of ministry is
to young adults and these articles will be very helpful in starting
meaningful conversation on an important topic for young professionals.
I hope you will continue to be so relevant.
Thanks again for being gutsy!--Rev. Erin C. Sharp, via email
Purpose of Horizons
I want to thank you for printing Eugenia Gamble's excellent column
each month. I never miss reading it. It offers hope and guidance.
However, I can't imagine why you found it necessary to publish
the article by S. L. Walker glorifying sex outside of marriage
(July/August 2001). I would not read this article in a secular
magazine, let alone in Horizons. I subscribe to Horizons
to keep informed about PW and to read about mission all over
the world. It seems to me that you have gotten away from the
purpose
of the magazine.--Judith Augustine, Midway, Pennsylvania
Editor's Note: The purpose of Horizons magazine
is the same as the purpose of Presbyterian Women-to nurture our
faith through prayer and Bible study, to support the mission
of the church worldwide, to work for justice and peace, and to
build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens
the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise
of God's kingdom.
Three Cheers
Hallelujah! I was delighted today to open my copy of Horizons
and find the subject of sex being discussed. I always read Horizons,
but never thought I'd find an issue like this. Sex is being pushed
and twisted in publications everywhere, and
as a certified associate Christian educator, I think we need
to see articles like this if only to open the subject to discussion.
The various viewpoints presented are factual, accurate and helpful.
I have previewed the video series "Love-All That and More"
and congratulate Presbyterian Women for helping to fund it. I
intend to order some extra copies to hand out as well as subscriptions
for two college-age granddaughters.--Phyllis Thonney, Moderator,
Inland Northwest Presbytery
Scholarships
I thought you would be interested to see what early publicity
and scholarships can do. After years of only two or three women
attending summer events, this year 16 women from our congregation
attended the summer gathering of Presbyterian Women in Eastern
Virginia Presbytery. The leadership development grant we received
from Presbyterian Women was a great inspiration to our members;
several paid their own way and the rest of us divided the scholarship
grant of $1500 to help cover our expenses.--Linda Schoenhoff,
Calvin Presbyterian Church, Eastern Virginia Presbytery
