Rejoice in Suffering

by Mimi Davis

My life changed forever on May 14, 2001. After surgery that lasted for several hours, I was told that a stage one cancerous cyst had been growing in each of my two ovaries. The news was devastating.

If you are suffering I encourage you to rejoice in spite of it.

Read Mimi Davis' account of how she learned to rejoice in suffering in this issue of Horizons.

The Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to
accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things that I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
Amen.

Mimi Davis, doctor of education, is a former college professor who lives in Owensboro, Kentucky with her husband and three daughters.
