Sacred Spaces

by Anne M. Jones

A sacred space is a space that is separate from, set aside or other than the usual. For Christians, sacred space is also where God, through the Holy Spirit, is enveloping and embracing whatever is happening and claiming all that is in the space as God's.

As a minister, I have been honored to be present in many sacred spaces-moments when I knew and experienced what it means to be an instrument of God's work. People exchange and share intimately in the power and love of God. Things happen that could never happen in any other circumstances-times of unbelievable anguish and despair, where evil is a permeating, suffocating force; moments when a simple word spoken positively, with love, changes a person's life forever; instants where out of the depths of sorrow, joy is found and proclaimed to one and all.
