New Journeys---Ancient Paths
by Debra A. Glor
Do sneakers ever make you think of mission? If
not, well, it might be time to simplify the way you think about
outreach and mission projects. Just like starting an exercise
program, sometimes the best way to get involved in mission is
to grab a pair of sneakers and start running---no procrastinating
or waiting for all the obstacles to be cleared, just go. In the
words of Marj Carpenter, former General Assembly moderator and
well-known mission advocate, "It's always a good time for
mission!"
Of course, Presbyterian Women enthusiasts have known this for
years, putting their faith into action and taking to heart Mahatma
Gandhi's challenge, "Be the change you wish to see."
When I heard the theme for the 1996 General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), "Consider Your Call," I asked myself,
"What touches your heart and makes you yearn to leave your
comfortable surroundings?" The answer was American Indian
issues, which I developed a deep appreciation for while growing
up near the Tonawanda Seneca Reservation in New York.
