News and Information about Presbyterian Women and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

Women Answering the Call

Can you think of a special woman whose life is a response to God's call? She can be honored at the 2003 Churchwide Gathering! The plenary hall will have a special display of photos honoring these Presbyterian women.

Remember, all kinds of women answer God's call---professionals, volunteers, stay-at-home mothers, church professionals---and sometimes make difficult choices about how to live out their faith. Take a moment to commend one such woman. On a 51/2" x 81/2" piece of paper, tell us her name, the name of her church and presbytery and how she answers God's call. Please include your name and contact information. Send the information and a 5" x 7" photo of your nominee to Amy Scott, 100 Witherspoon St., Rm 3070, Louisville, KY 40202-1396. Nominations and photos must be received no later than April 1, 2003. Photos will not be returned.

Mark Your Calendar!

The annual Association of Presbyterian Church Educators (APCE) will be held in Denver, January 29 through February 1, 2003. The event features presentations, worship services, workshops and study tours. Among the presenters are Rev. Stephany Graham, Associate for African American Leadership Development for the PC(USA), Dr. Thomas Troeger, author and professor at Illiff School of Theology, and Rev. Hugh Donnelly, recreational ministry leader.

Registration is $255 for members and $355 for non-members. Annual membership costs $20 for students or retired people, $30 for volunteers or associates, $55 for professionals. Registration should be postmarked by January 3, 2003. To register contact Pat Murphy, 888/728-7228, ext. 5460 or pmurphy@ctr.pcusa.org or Carl Horton 888/728-7228, ext. 5453 or chorton@ctr.pcusa.org. Hotel accommodations at Adams Mark Hotel are available for a discounted rate. Call 800/444-2326 and ask for the APCE rate.

Attention All Gathering Friends!

Horizons is looking for women who attended previous Churchwide Gatherings, made a new friend (or many new friends!), kept in touch and plan to reconnect at the 2003 Gathering in Louisville. We'd like to interview you for an upcoming issue of Horizons.

Send your name, your friend's name, and the ways we can contact you (email, fax, address, phone) to Leah Bradley, c/o Presbyterian Women, 100 Witherspoon St., Louisville, KY 40202- 1396; fax 502/569-8085; lbradley@ctr.pcusa.org. Deadline is January 1, 2003.

Hot Cocoa Joins Coffee and Tea as New Fair Trade Product

Equal Exchange and the Presbyterian Coffee Project are now offering fairly traded hot cocoa for Presbyterian congregations, offices and homes.

Equal Exchange's new cocoa mix gives Presbyterian congregations and their members a positive way to respond to the recent reports of chronic poverty, exploited child labor and even slavery on cocoa farms. Although Americans spend $13 billion a year on cocoa products, farmers receive low prices which keep them poor, vulnerable and desperate. However, there is good news! Through the Presbyterian Coffee Project, farmers who produce coffee, tea and now hot cocoa are guaranteed a fair price for their products and a reliable trading partner that helps them break this cycle of poverty.

The Presbyterian Coffee Project is a part of the Enough for Everyone program of the PC(USA).

Enough For Everyone is cosponsored nationally by Presbyterian Women, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program, and the Women's Ministries and Social Justice Program Areas.

For more information on the Presbyterian Coffee Project and Equal Exchange or to order products, contact Equal Exchange, 251 Revere Street, Canton, MA 02021; 781/830-0303 ext. 228; interfaith@equalexchange.com.

Do a New Thing

Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Association (PHEWA) invites you to join them at their upcoming biennial conference, January 23--26, 2003 in San Antonio. Based on God's words in Isaiah 43:19, "I am about to do a new thing," this gathering will celebrate PHEWA's dedication to social justice. Workshops, plenaries, round table discussions and worship will surround the business meeting, offering the opportunity to grow in faith.

To request a registration packet or learn more about the conference, contact Joan Thompson, 888/728-7228, ext. 5082 or jthompso@ctr.pcusa.org.

Encore Appearance

Looking for ways to promote Presbyterian Women? The "Who Are Presbyterian Women?" resources can help! These folders and posters featuring the many faces of PW are a great giveaway item for gatherings in your congregation, presbytery or synod, or they make a great promotional display. To request these resources, contact Marsha Shelton, PW promotions assistant, 888/728-7228, ext. 5389 or mshelton@ctr.pcusa.org at least two weeks in advance of the needed date.
