Finding God in Silence

by April Swofford

I teach a spiritual discipline called Centering Prayer and the most frequently asked question by new learners is, "What is the goal?"

We live in a world that is goal-oriented, success-seeking, money-centered. We plan to make the most of everything: our work, our recreation, our time spent with family and friends. Even while driving to and from work we often do business or visit with a friend or a family member on the cell phone, or listen to audio books or motivational speakers on cd or cassette. We even eat on the run so we don't waste time or allow any time not to be "well-spent." We spend our days running from one thing to another, because that is how one lives in our society. We have to be constantly doing, doing, doing or we will not reach our goal.

All this activity makes life noisy.

How do you find God in such a world? Read April Swofford's answers in this article in Horizons magazine. Subscribe today.--call 800/524-2612
