The Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) is in partnership with one church in Kenya---the
Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). Each of the following
Extra Commitment Opportunities (ECOs) would be considered as
priority activities for support by the PCEA and the PC(USA).
Chogoria Hospital, situated 140 miles northeast of Nairobi,
was established as a Presbyterian mission hospital in 1923. It
is now operated by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. Chogoria
offers both curative and preventative medicine with emphasis
placed on family planning and infant care. (ECO #862137)
Kikuyu Hospital is the oldest mission hospital in Kenya. This
195-bed facility has nine buildings and a community-based health
care program in the surrounding communities of Kanyanjara, Kerwa,
Nguriunditu and Ruthigiti. Contributions will go toward continued
support of health programs. (ECO #862754)
The PCEA has launched a new and exciting program, resulting
in a first-class visitor's residence and conference center to
accommodate the large number of overseas visitors to the PCEA
and Kenya each year. Funding is needed for construction of an
up to 70-room guest house and a modern, well-equipped conference
center. (ECO #047982)
For every 100 Kenyan students who would be eligible and qualified
for college level studies, only about 20 university slots are
available. The Presbyterian Church of East Africa has launched
an ambitious project to help ensure that the next generation
of Kenya's leaders are committed Christians and well-trained
citizens. The Presbyterian College, with its Institute for Pastoral
Studies, is already providing advanced degree study opportunities,
but needs to do more. A gift of $1000 (US) will provide a full
tuition scholarship for one year. A gift of $100 (US) will purchase
10 library books. (ECO #862752)
