Dispatch from Forbearance Presbyterian Church

A Calling

by Charlotte Johnstone

Every now and then, particularly when he looks out at Forbearance's congregation on a Sunday morning, Rev. Hustisford thinks of the young man who came to see him some months ago. John Bartlett was his name and he had recently decided that his destiny was to become a minister. A senior at a local college, John had attended Forbearance intermittently for several years, but Rev. Hustisford could not say that he knew him well, at least not well enough to meet John's enthusiasm with an automatic endorsement as to suitability for ministry. On the other hand, here was a bright young man-confident, affable, educated, energetic and poised-talking about a "calling," about making a difference, about how he loved people and wanted to help them, about all he felt he had to contribute to a world in need of healing.
