Ask Jane

Working Out a Spiritual Discipline

Asking the question is the first step in answering it!

First let's talk about prayer. Prayer becomes second nature the more you do it. What is your favorite phrase for talking with God? Holy One? Creator? Gracious God? Find a way to begin prayer that feels right to you and use it regularly. Waiting without words is a helpful way to begin. It takes discipline to clear your mind of grocery lists, appointments and other distractions, but do try it. Find a time of day when you are least likely to be interrupted.

Jane Parker Huber has served Presbyterian Women at all governing body levels for more than 50 years. Well-known as a hymn-writer, she composes contemporary and inclusive songs using familiar tunes.
