About this Issue

Building Community
Hammers, shovels, plaster, bricks, nails–the tools with which we build things have distinct purposes and measurable results. But when it comes to building community, our methods and measures are less easily defined and the tools that work in one instance might not be appropriate in another.

Building community is more about feelings, experiences, support and a sense of belonging. The stories shared in this issue reveal some of the ways Presbyterian women are (or should be) building community in their midst. Granted, this magazine is not a blueprint for all situations, but its hoped that in its own way, Horizons is building community across the great expanse of congregations in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), strengthening our church and witnessing to the promise of God’s kingdom.

How to Use This Magazine

Horizons is the magazine of Presbyterian Women. It is planned and designed for individuals and PW circles, newcomers and longtime participants in the organization. You'll notice resources are scattered throughout the magazine---in sidebars, boxes and sometimes entire articles---because Presbyterian Women is made up of leaders, both current leaders and women with leadership potential. Participants in Presbyterian Women are also active---in their congregation, community and world-so we work to include ways you can respond to what you read in Horizons.

The purpose of Horizonsmagazine is the same as the purpose of our publisher, Presbyterian Women:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ
and empowered by the Holy Spirit
we commit ourselves:
to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
to support the mission of the church worldwide,
to work for justice and peace,
to build an inclusive, caring community of women
that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom.
