PW Reading List

Prior to 2000, Horizons published an annual reading list, created by the Nurture Committee of the Churchwide Coordinating Team of Presbyterian Women (CCT/PW), to share books that moved and inspired members of this committee during the previous year. In recent years, the needs of PW groups, the diversity of Horizons readers and the number of remarkable resources have increased to such a degree that one list, once a year was not enough.

Today, every issue of Horizons includes as many recommended resources as our 40 pages will hold—in the regular department, “Books,” and in sidebars throughout the magazine. In addition to offering a variety of subjects, we try to recommend at least one book that relates to the theme of the issue. For example, Sacred Legacy (p. 39) looks at women’s gift of writing and encourages readers to cherish their creativity today.

Here are a few ways to use the books we recommend

Create your own reading list
Choose your favorite resource from each issue of Horizons and create an annual reading list to share with Presbyterian Women in your congregation.

Share the good news
Reprint one or more of our book reviews in your PW newsletter or on your Web site. Participants in PW are welcome to use any text published in Horizons as long as the publication is created solely for PW’s use, is not being sold and credit is given to Horizons. We ask that the following permission line appears: This review was originally published in the [month and year] issue of Horizons, published by Presbyterian Women for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Reprinted with permission. To subscribe or order materials from Presbyterian Women, call 800/524–2612.

Start a reading circle
Add new life to your PW circle by setting aside one meeting each quarter, season or year to review books. Or start a new circle whose sole task is to read and discuss books. Either choose one book from each issue of Horizons that everyone will read and discuss, or invite each member to choose a different book from a given issue and share a brief a synopsis with the group.

Plan a meeting or retreat
If your PW is searching for a theme for your next meeting or retreat, consider using one of our magazine themes—you’ll have copious theme-related resources at your fingertips!

Support the 2005 Global Exchange to Brazil
Beginning with this issue (see below), until the September/October 2005 issue of Horizons, each issue will feature at least one resource on Brazil’s culture, people, history or current events. Encourage PW in your synod to start learning about Brazil now—then invite the Global Exchange participant from your synod to speak at a gathering.

Build your library
If your church or PW has money in its budget to purchase new books each year, use the book reviews in Horizons to help you choose resources best suited to your congregation or group. Don’t forget about the recommended resources in the annual Bible study. Some resources are selected especially for that year’s theme, while others will serve you year-in-and-year-out for basic Bible study.
