Perspectives on Forgiveness

by Nelle Bordeaux

"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace" (Eph. 1:7).

You have a knot in your stomach and a lump in your throat. More important, you have a deep hurt in your heart. You know that as a Christian you ought to forgive the person who has wronged you or seek forgiveness if you have hurt another person. Yet you can’t quite bring yourself to forgive or ask forgiveness. You want to be forgiven, but moving beyond the pain seems impossible. Every one of us sins, makes mistakes and needs to give and receive forgiveness. What does our faith teach us about forgiveness?

Specifically, what can we learn from the Bible about how to forgive and how to
be forgiven? Here are some steps toward forgiveness with biblical examples.

Nelle Bordeaux is the parish associate for First Presbyterian Church, Savannah, Georgia. She and her husband, Tom, have two children, Annie Lillian and Thomas.

Join Nelle as she explores Christianity’s unique view of forgiveness. She offers scripture and questions for meditation in the November/December 2004 issue of Horizons.
