Toward a World of by Nane Annan This year marks the 60th anniversary of the United Nations. In September, world leaders will come together in New York for a summit based on my husband’s report, In Larger Freedom, which encapsulates the idea that development, security and human rights go hand in hand. The report puts forward a comprehensive strategy for dealing with the interrelated threats and challenges facing our world. One of the key elements is progress on the Millennium Development Goals, a set of eight critical, time-bound goals, agreed on unanimously by the world leaders five years ago. The goals range from halving extreme poverty and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS, to promoting gender equality, ensuring universal primary education as well as environmental sustainability—all by 2015. Since my husband was appointed Secretary-General of the United Nations, I have chosen to focus my efforts on four issues close to my heart—the empowerment of women, education for girls and boys, AIDS, and access to safe drinking water. Although seemingly diverse, these issues are inextricably linked. The empowerment and education of women and girls are keys to fighting poverty and HIV/AIDS. In turn, AIDS and the absence of clean water are major obstacles to gender equality and the fight against poverty.
