Tempest in a Crystal Vase
Dispatch from Forbearance Presbyterian Church

by Charlotte Johnstone

Luci Forester has been known for years around Forbearance as “the flower lady,” an informal position somewhat under the auspices of the church’s Presbyterian Women’s organization. She maintains a donor schedule for Sunday altar bouquets
of fresh flowers and supervises flower arrangements for special occasions, weddings and funerals—a specialized niche that requires attention to detail. It’s a job that suits Luci, for she prefers to work alone, she doesn’t have to attend meetings and she can set her own schedule.

Several months ago, however, after various Forbearance officers were honored for their service to the church, Luci began to feel aggrieved. Did no one notice what she did for the church? Had it occurred to anyone that she also might like to be thanked? She wasn’t on any of the church’s boards, but what she did made a difference at Forbearance, so why did people recognize the difference only when they had complaints?

Charlotte Johnstone is a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She (and the cast of Forbearance Presbyterian Church) welcomes comments. Write to her at Horizons, 100 Witherspoon St., Louisville, KY 40202-1396, or email wjohns4949@aol.com.

Does Forbearance show they appreciate Luci? How do they do it? Find out in the May/June 2005 issue of Horizons!
