Standing Together for Peace
Actions of the 216th General Assembly

by Rick Ufford-Chase

Among the many actions taken by the 216th General Assembly (Richmond, 2004), those related to Israel and Palestine generated a great deal of interest across the church. In one of those actions, the assembly voted overwhelmingly to begin a process of “selective, phased divestment” in companies that are in some way supporting the Israeli military occupation of the Palestinian Territories or are involved in violence there that is harming Israelis or Palestinians.

Rick Ufford-Chase, an elder at Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Arizona, is moderator of the 216th (2004–6) General Assembly. He is cofounder and codirector of BorderLinks, a PC(USA)-supported border ministry.

Moderator Rick Ufford-Chase details the decision, the process and criteria for the selective, phased divestment. Learn more about this important issue in the May/June 2005 issue of Horizons.
