Forbearance’s annual Arts and Crafts Show was only one day from opening and the only submission not yet received was Luke Krebsbach’s promised painting. Luke, a Forbearance regular, along with his wife, Caroline, a veteran church school teacher, was a well-known wildlife artist, specializing in birds and waterfowl indigenous to the area. His paintings commanded a hefty price and when he agreed to participate—something he hadn’t been willing to do before—the show’s steering committee felt honored to have a true professional represented.

Ten years ago, the Arts and Crafts Show had begun as a modest attempt to showcase the hobbies and artistic aspirations of Forbearance’s members, but it had since grown into a daylong exhibition of saleable items that, in turn, provided a nice infusion of cash to the church’s general fund. The steering committee’s task, among other things, was to act as a clearinghouse—judges of artistic merit by default, one might say, although, if truth be told, they rarely turned anyone down. One person’s lovingly created treasure might, they conceded, be seen as junk by another, but the show’s purpose, after all, primarily was to reward the creative impulse and promote aesthetic imagination. And, over time, Forbearance’s stitchers, crafters and dabblers had responded with submissions that had grown ever more ambitious.
