From Darkness to Light
Dispatch from Forbearance Presbyterian Church
by Charlotte Johnstone
Rev. Hustisford was feeling testy about Easter, a feeling he really couldn’t share with any of Forbearance’s members. After all, Forbearance’s staff and several committees had done a great deal of careful planning to ensure a memorable Lenten season with its various services leading to a joyful Easter morning. In fact, Lent was Rev. Hustisford’s favorite time of year—a season of reflection and atonement, culminating in an affirmation of resurrection and new life; a season and morning unlike any other on the church’s calendar. He relished the liturgical intricacies of Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Saturday’s Easter vigil and Easter morning—welcoming the sermonic challenges of a season that theologically probed everything from political brutality to the surpassing mystery of God’s ultimate promise.
Yet, while he was a preacher and teacher, he was also a student—a professional inquirer, who badly needed some uninterrupted time to read, write, reflect, think and think again. And, if he was testy, it was probably because he was anticipating the inevitable loss of that time to the niggling and sometimes fractious details of the season that always seemed to make an appearance at the worst possible time.
What surprise changes will Forbearnce members give Rev. Hustisford for the Easter service? And can he maintain the joy? Find out in the full text of this department!
