Just as using a different name or title for God can change our understanding of verbal prayer, a new bearing may alter our honest communication with God. Whether in personal or community prayer, there are a variety of gestures and postures that communicate a great deal without saying a word. Hands can be at your side, or clasped in prayer. Your arms can be held open as if to receive, or raised above your head. Your eyes can be lifted to heaven, or your chin can be against your chest. As Presbyterians, we sit and stand well, but we could also try moving in time with the words we say.

Move your body in harmony with the words of the Lord’s Prayer. Follow the instructions in the May/June 2006 issue of Horizons for embodying prayer, and learn how this technique worked for one person.
