When you feel called to a social justice ministry, or any other ministry, what’s your first step in the discernment process?

For many of us, it is to explore whether we have the appropriate gifts and motivations for that call. This exploration demonstrates the spiritual gift of humility, long considered central to—and indicative of—spiritual growth. Humility is not, as it is so often conceived, simply a matter of not thinking too much of ourselves; it also is not thinking too little of ourselves.
