The season of Advent marks the beginning
of another church year; an opportunity to begin anew with the
birth of Christ. This issue of Horizons also seeks to
provide something new for our readers-new perspectives on what
we call art, on what inspires us, nourishes us and tells our
stories.
The art chosen for our cover is a new approach to a familiar
scene. This is a ceramic plate depicting Christ's birth from
the perspective of a Mexican artist, Mariana Flores Gonzales.
Even more unique, this is not merely art for art's sake, but
a means of providing for the artist and her family. This plate
is one of many craft items sold by Ten Thousand Villages, an
organization that provides vital, fair income to Third World
artisans by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories
throughout North America (see Gifts That Make a Difference, pgs.
22--24). A well-known story seen through new eyes-exactly what
Horizons hopes to bring you with this and every issue.
