About this Issue:
Approaching the World as a Presbyterian
So,
what does it mean to be Presbyterian? And how does that affect
the way we approach the world around us? Or does it affect it
at all?
Being part of Presbyterian Women means knowing more than the
PW Purpose. Much of what drives, inspires and guides the organization
is related to the first half of PW's name-being Presbyterian.
Scattered throughout this issue are responses from a variety
of women, reflecting on what it means to be Presbyterian. The
responses are as varied as the women we interviewed, as diverse
as our denomination. Likewise, the articles in this issue offer
some insight into how Presbyterians approach this world, at least
on paper.
It is difficult to capture what it means to be Presbyterian,
because, as almost any member will tell you, we are reformed
and always reforming-from the first creeds and confessions to
the most recent overture sent to the 2002 General Assembly. However,
the heart of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) does not change-our
respect for education, our devotion to mission, our search for
peace and justice, our attempt to do things decently and in order
and our insistence to remain open to the guidance of the Holy
Spirit.

How to Use This Magazine
Horizons is the magazine of Presbyterian Women. It is planned
and designed for individuals and PW circles, newcomers and longtime
participants in the organization. You'll notice resources are
scattered throughout the magazine---in sidebars, boxes and sometimes
entire articles---because Presbyterian Women is made up of leaders,
both current leaders and women with leadership potential. Participants
in Presbyterian Women are also active---in their congregation,
community and world-so we work to include ways you can respond
to what you read in Horizons.
The purpose of Horizons magazine is the same as the purpose
of our publisher, Presbyterian Women:
· to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible
study
· to support the mission of the church worldwide
· to work for justice and peace
· to build an inclusive, caring community of women
that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses
to the promise of God's kingdom
