About this Issue

Supporting Mission
Just as the star over Bethlehem guided the magi, the teachings of Jesus Christ guide participants in Presbyterian Women as they carry out the second commitment in the PWPurpose---to support the mission of the church worldwide.

Once again, Horizons sought stories of PW in mission, but we also attempted to provide another perspective. Rather than seeing the mission field as outside or beyond us, what happens if we look in? What would it be like to have a foreign missionary come to the United States? (See William Paul's article, "Missionary in Our Midst.") How well or how long can we care for others if we don't take care of ourselves? (See Patricia Gleich's article, "An Ounce of Prevention.")

We also included stories of inspiring women and successful mission projects, scattered throughout the magazine. Whether this issue motivates you to duplicate what you read or reevaluate your approach to mission, we pray it is a helpful guide on your journey this Advent season.

How to Use This Magazine

Horizons is the magazine of Presbyterian Women. It is planned and designed for individuals and PW circles, newcomers and longtime participants in the organization. You'll notice resources are scattered throughout the magazine---in sidebars, boxes and sometimes entire articles---because Presbyterian Women is made up of leaders, both current leaders and women with leadership potential. Participants in Presbyterian Women are also active---in their congregation, community and world-so we work to include ways you can respond to what you read in Horizons.

The purpose of Horizonsmagazine is the same as the purpose of our publisher, Presbyterian Women:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ
and empowered by the Holy Spirit
we commit ourselves:
to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
to support the mission of the church worldwide,
to work for justice and peace,
to build an inclusive, caring community of women
that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom.
