About this Issue
Thinking Outside the Circle
The theme of this issue describes something we attempt to do with every
issue of Horizons: challenge our readers to look beyond the ways they
usually approach their faith and their life. In this attempt, the focus
is on the people and situations many of us are around every day but
may no longer see—the PW circle we’ve known longer than
some of our relatives; the girl child we’re raising the same way
our mother and grandmother raised us; the sisters in Christ we’ve
heard about so often on the evening news that we’ve become numb
to their plight.
PW lives and moves and breathes in and through its circles.
To think outside the circle doesn’t mean abandoning this familiar
model of being, but will hopefully prompt us to broaden our
circle, reshape it as needed and strengthen it with God always at the
center.

How to Use This Magazine
Horizons is the magazine of Presbyterian Women. It is planned
and designed for individuals and PW circles, newcomers and longtime
participants in the organization. You'll notice resources are
scattered throughout the magazine---in sidebars, boxes and sometimes
entire articles---because Presbyterian Women is made up of leaders,
both current leaders and women with leadership potential. Participants
in Presbyterian Women are also active---in their congregation,
community and world-so we work to include ways you can respond
to what you read in Horizons.
The purpose of Horizonsmagazine is the same as the purpose
of our publisher, Presbyterian Women:
Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ
and empowered by the Holy Spirit
we commit ourselves:
to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
to support the mission of the church worldwide,
to work for justice and peace,
to build an inclusive, caring community of women
that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom.
