About This Issue
The Roots of Social Justice

When this issue of Horizons was in its infancy, the intent was to publish a “social justice issue,” lifting up some of the ministries where Presbyterian Women lives out the third point in the PW Purpose—to work for justice and peace. But in our quest to assess where we are in that work, we discovered a need to look at where we’ve been. What motivated many of the women who began working for justice long before the PW Purpose was written? What questions must be asked and what changes made in order to keep social justice at the forefront of our mission and ministry? Where can each of us plug in, as women who are Presbyterian and as Presbyterian Women?

About the Cover Art
The art used on the cover of this issue was created by Nora Weston, a high school student, for an upcoming stewardship campaign, “Strong Roots—Healthy Growth,” at Danville Presbyterian Church, Danville, Kentucky.

How to Use This Magazine

Horizons is the magazine of Presbyterian Women. It is planned and designed for individuals and PW circles, newcomers and longtime participants in the organization. You'll notice resources are scattered throughout the magazine—in sidebars, boxes and sometimes entire articles—because Presbyterian Women is made up of leaders, both current leaders and women with leadership potential. Participants in Presbyterian Women are also active—in their congregation, community and world-so we work to include ways you can respond to what you read in Horizons.

The purpose of Horizons magazine is the same as the purpose of our publisher, Presbyterian Women:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit
we commit ourselves:

  • to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study
  • to support the mission of the church worldwide
  • to work for justice and peace
  • to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom
