Aging, But Aging Well by Pat Gleich

At the 2006 Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women, National Health Ministries asked attendees to provide demographic, health status and well-being information to help shape future health-related activities for the aging “boomer” generation in congregations. Survey respondents at the Gathering were older women; only women who were born during 1920–1959 completed the survey.

Aging Congregations
Projections of population growth predict that by 2030 the number of people age 65 and older will double in the United States, increasing from 36 million to 72 million. With a median age of 58 (compared to a national median age of 37), Presbyterians already are an older church.1 Looking at what is termed the “boomer” cohort in the Presbyterian Church—those who were born between 1946 and 1964—by 2030 as many as 1.7 million Presbyterians will be between the ages of 65 and 80; more than 60 percent of that demographic will be female.
