![]() Beyond the Kitchen Counter
Hugs and embraces, loud laughter and lively conversation, bright outfits and high heels . . . what in the world was going on at the Holiday Inn in Irving, Texas, which usually serves as a quiet crashing pad for American Airlines crews? It was Encuentro V, which means that 400 women of all ages and races gathered July 27–29, 2007, for the fifth national conference sponsored by Hispanic Latina Presbyterian Women (HLPW). Leaders from synods across the continental United States and Puerto Rico came to be nurtured and renewed. “Women are the backbone of our homes, communities and the church. They are so invested in caring for others that they often neglect themselves,” said Cecilia Casal, newly elected moderator of HLPW and top organizer for the event. “Encuentro gives us an opportunity to model a healthy lifestyle for women, where work and play are interconnected in the ongoing dance of life and ministry,” she added.
