About This Issue
Celebrations and Sabbath

No matter how full one’s to-do list is, it’s the rare person who can’t find (or make) time for a party. Celebrations offer a tangible and life affirming means for marking significant moments in our lives—declaring the ending of one thing and/or the beginning of another.

With age and experience comes the knowledge that life waits for no woman and time marches on whether we pause to acknowledge it or not. That is the blessing of having a Sabbath day, an hour, even a moment—some time each week when we pause to remember that the Sabbath is both a commandment and a gift. May this issue of Horizons inspire you to celebrate the Sabbath and to view even the briefest opportunity for reflection and renewal as a cause for celebration.

How to Use This Magazine

Horizons is the magazine of Presbyterian Women. It is planned and designed for individuals and PW circles, newcomers and longtime participants in the organization. You'll notice resources are scattered throughout the magazine—in sidebars, boxes and sometimes entire articles—because Presbyterian Women is made up of leaders, both current leaders and women with leadership potential. Participants in Presbyterian Women are also active—in their congregation, community and world—so we work to include ways you can respond to what you read in Horizons.

The purpose of Horizons magazine is the same as the purpose of our publisher, Presbyterian Women:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit we commit ourselves:

  • to nurture our faith through prayer and
    Bible study
  • to support the mission of the church worldwide
  • to work for justice and peace
  • to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom
