About This Issue
Food: Understanding Hunger and Global Poverty

Attempting to understand the current global food crisis can feel overwhelming. We know all too well that there are hungry people all around us—whether they be our neighbors, or family members, or the faces we see in heartrending photographs of barren lands and desolate communities. But as children of God and followers of Christ, we are called to action, and we are called to hope. This issue explores the realities and causes of hunger and poverty, and also offers stories of action and hope that will help us address the food crisis. Just as Christ invites us to the table, we are also invited to join him in sharing the abundance of creation and the fullness of God's love.

How to Use This Magazine

Horizons is the magazine of Presbyterian Women. It is planned and designed for individuals and PW circles, newcomers and longtime participants in the organization. You'll notice resources are scattered throughout the magazine—in sidebars, boxes and sometimes entire articles—because Presbyterian Women is made up of leaders, both current leaders and women with leadership potential. Participants in Presbyterian Women are also active—in their congregation, community and world—so we work to include ways you can respond to what you read in Horizons.

The purpose of Horizons magazine is the same as the purpose of our publisher, Presbyterian Women:

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit we commit ourselves:

  • to nurture our faith through prayer and
    Bible study
  • to support the mission of the church worldwide
  • to work for justice and peace
  • to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God's kingdom
