Living Our Faith by Doing Justice
by Linda Bryant Valentine

As part of our thorough, thoughtful and intentionally inclusive preparation for the 218th General Assembly in San José in June 2008, the denomination’s former stated clerk, Cliff Kirkpatrick, and I held a series of conference calls with leaders from all parts of the church. Conversations that were simultaneously lively in their tone and far-reaching in their scope blossomed among pastors, presbytery executives, elders, seminary presidents, former moderators, GAC members, PW leaders and many other dedicated Presbyterians.

In these calls, we asked two questions—first, “Where do you see spiritual and worship renewal in the church?” and second, “What is your vision for the church in living out Micah 6:8?” Micah 6:8 was the scriptural basis of the 2008 assembly, which encouraged participants to consider “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God?”

The responses we heard were like a litany as, one-by-one, people lifted up their rich and diverse experiences of worship and spiritual renewal, and shared their vision for the church.
