Dispatch from Forbearance Presbyterian Church
People in parking lot reading a list of rules

Seek and Ye Shall Find
by Charlotte Johnstone

As Forbearance’s town has expanded with new people drawn to several recently acquired industries in the area, so, too, has Forbearance Church grown in membership. Consequently, there has been talk lately about the possibility of building an addition to more efficiently serve the church’s expanded programs—a nice problem to have, but nevertheless a formidable financial undertaking for all concerned.

A more immediate problem, though, has been the inadequate parking available on Forbearance’s property, a source of much grumbling from parishioners unable to park next to the church building and forced to search the crowded streets for an open space. The existing parking lot, shoehorned into the area behind the church and now clearly too small, quickly became, about a year ago, a problem-solving priority for the church’s governing bodies. As a result, a large and vacant residential lot adjacent to the parking area was with considerable effort successfully sought, acquired, bulldozed and paved—expansive virgin territory for Forbearance members disinclined to hike their way to church, especially through rain or snow.

However, the designated shepherd of the parking lot expansion, Bob Elliot, chair of Forbearance’s Building and Grounds Committee, was not about to let anyone actually use the new lot until some ground rules were established.
