Joining the Battle Against Sexual Exploitation of Children
ECPAT-USA
by Sara Friedman

Which of these is the trafficked child?

  1. A delicate, doe-eyed 11-year-old girl, transported to the United States from India, is kept hidden in a brothel or hotel room, and forced to have sex with as many as 50 men each night. She’s often beaten, drugged or terrorized into obedience.
  2. A scantily clad, inner-city 16-year-old American girl with an attitude stands on a street corner, brazenly inviting passers-by to an hour of sex for $50, or $25—or whatever they will pay.

Many people—even well-intended and compassionate people— would identify the first as trafficked and view the second as a prostitute. The young girl from Asia clearly is an innocent victim. While the American teenager may elicit our sympathy, we reason that nobody is forcing her to the street. This response is understandable, but the truth is that both girls are victims of sex trafficking—not only in reality, but according to the law.
